A Mammary Stem Cell Population Identified and Characterized in Late Embryogenesis Reveals Similarities to Human Breast Cancer
Here, researchers identify, isolate, and characterize the fetal mammary stem cell state since the invasive and proliferative processes of mammogenesis resemble phases of cancer progression. [Cell Stem Cell]

Breast Cancer Signatures for Invasiveness and Prognosis Defined by Deep Sequencing of MicroRNA
The transition from ductal carcinoma in situ to invasive ductal carcinoma is a key event in breast cancer progression that is still not well understood. To discover the microRNAs regulating this critical transition, researchers used 80 biopsies from invasive ductal carcinoma, eight from ductal carcinoma in situ, and six from normal breast. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Abstract | Press Release

Mammary Tumor Regression Elicited by Wnt Signaling Inhibitor Requires Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Protein 5
In this study the molecular and phenotypic parallel between tumor regression and mammary gland involution suggests that Wnt-driven mammary tumors use the same growth mechanism as proliferating normal mammary glands. [Cancer Res] Abstract

Tumor Tropism of Intravenously Injected Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Neural Stem Cells and Their Gene Therapy Application in a Metastatic Breast Cancer Model
Using a dual-color whole body imaging technology, researchers demonstrated that after tail vein injection human neural stem cells displayed a robust migratory capacity outside the central nervous system in both immunodeficient and immunocompetent mice and homed in on established orthotopic 4T1 mouse mammary tumors. [Stem Cells] Abstract

Hormone-Responsive Three-Dimensional Multicellular Culture Model of Human Breast Tissue
A hormone-responsive three-dimensional human tissue-like culture system was developed in which human primary mammary epithelial cells were co-cultured with two types of predominant mammary stromal cells on silk protein scaffolds. [Biomaterials] Abstract

CBL Enhances Breast Tumor Formation by Inhibiting Tumor Suppressive Activity of TGF-ß Signaling
Here, researchers show that casitas B-lineage lymphoma (CBL) is highly expressed in breast cancer cells and significantly inhibits transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) tumor suppressive activity. [Oncogene] Abstract

Contribution of CXCL12 Secretion to Invasion of Breast Cancer Cells
This study examines the role of increased production of CXCL12 in tumor cell invasion and malignancy. [Breast Cancer Res] Abstract

Intervention of Human Breast Cell Carcinogenesis Chronically Induced by 2-Amino-1-Methyl-6-Phenylimidazo[4,5-b]Pyridine
Here, researchers demonstrated, for the first time, that cumulative exposures to 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine at physiologically-achievable, pico- to nano-molar concentrations effectively induced progressive carcinogenesis of human breast epithelial MCF10A cells from a non-cancerous stage to premalignant and malignant stages in a dose- and exposure-dependent manner. [Carcinogenesis] Abstract

Silencing of Tumor Suppressor Genes RASSF1A, SLIT2, and WIF1 by Promoter Hypermethylation in Hereditary Breast Cancer
In the present work researchers analyzed the methylation status of three tumor suppressor gene promoters in 47 hereditary breast cancer tumors. [Mol Carcinog] Abstract

The Relationships between Snail1 and Estrogen Receptor Signaling in Breast Cancer Cells
Researchers’ aim was to study the relationships between estrogen receptor machinery and Snail1 signaling, and mechanism of Snail1 regulation in hormone-resistant breast cancer cells. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

Association between Age at Diagnosis and Disease-Specific Mortality among Postmenopausal Women with Hormone Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer
The objective of this study was to assess the association between age at diagnosis and breast cancer outcome in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. [JAMA]

Soy Isoflavone Supplementation for Breast Cancer Risk Reduction: A Randomized Phase II Trial
Researchers conducted a phase IIB trial of soy isoflavone supplementation to examine its effect on breast epithelial proliferation and other biomarkers in the healthy high-risk breast. [Cancer Prev Res] Abstract

Gemcitabine in Combination with Vinorelbine in Elderly Patients with Anthracycline- and Taxane-Pretreated Metastatic Breast Cancer
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of gemcitabine in combination with vinorelbine in elderly patients with anthracycline- and taxane-pretreated metastatic breast cancer. [Cancer Chemother Pharmacol] Abstract
